It is a project that has been under development for the last decade, but this week it was presented and tested at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro in Vila Real. The ‘electronic cane’ fitted with GPS mapping software allows sight impaired users to get from A to B by giving verbal instructions. Say reports, it is not ready for commercial sale, and still has some teething problems, particularly when it comes to the detection of stairs.
