Exam success at Algarve school

STUDENTS AT the International School of the Algarve in Lagoa have again achieved what is described as “a fine set” of examination results in their A levels and GCSEs.

The pass rate at A level was 100 per cent for the fourth year running, with students achieving a sufficient number of entry points to be accepted into the universities of their choice.

At GCSE, while the overall pass rate was 100 per cent, the total number of top grades (A+ to C) was 10 per cent higher than the UK average.

John Butterworth, head teacher of the school, told The Resident: “This is a considerable achievement in a school which has non-selective entry and where around 50 per cent of the students’ first-language is not English.”

The percentage of A+ and A grades was also higher than the UK average. More than 80 per cent of the year 11 students achieved top grades in five or more subjects, the usual criterion for enabling them to continue to A levels.

Subjects with the most outstanding results included English, Drama, History and Portuguese.

This year’s best students included Moritz Ehrlich with five A+, two A’s and one B grade. Moritz Ehrlich already had three top grade GCSEs taken in previous years under his belt.

Rebecca Mangan with two A+, four A’s, one B and two C’s and Alexander Cooper with  three A+, two A’s, three B’s and two C’s also achieved good results this year.
