Explosion kills GNR

A GNR sergeant was killed and four soldiers seriously wounded when deactivating explosive materials on the firing range of São Marcos in Tavira on July 19.

Sergeant João Maroco, a bomb specialist, was killed while deactivating 50kg of gun powder from firearms confiscated in Alvor, Portimão. Soldiers Avelãs and Conceição were transported to the Hospital Distrital de Faro (HDF) with critical burns on 40 per cent of their bodies and later transported to a specialist burns unit in Lisbon. Two other soldiers, who suffered less severe burns, were assisted by the HDF and are stable.
