Fight night a big hit

Top Team Albufeira kick-boxing star Marina ‘Princess’ Zueva was amongst the winners at last Saturday’s Algarve Dynamite Fight Night 26 following her clear and popular victory over Moroccan champion Watty Nassir in the closing bout.

Earlier, the only championship fight on the card with the European K1 b 60kg class belt on offer, went the distance before the ring judges awarded Roman Skulsky a point’s decision over João Porta-Chaves.

Perhaps more glamourous and certainly even more eagerly-awaited was the subsequent appearance of the Algarve’s K1 World Champion and Muay Thai gold medallist Rui ‘Pitbull’ Briceno who dominated old adversary Jesus Blanco for a clearcut win.

More explosive was the knock-out success of another popular figure in local fight circles, Miguel ‘Mr Kick’ Varela, who lived up to his name in dispatching Spanish opponent Alejandro Bonilla with a well-placed kick in the face in the opening round.

Another quick finish was achieved in the only mixed martial arts contest of the night when Ireland’s Colin Byrne failed to cope with Victor Kiko and failed to rise from the canvas following several first round takedowns.

The over 2,000 fight fans were further entertained by victories from Micaela Varela, Vadym Batenko and Jocimar Pretinho, with the only disappointment of an otherwise exciting promotion coming when the much anticipated meeting between WKU European champion João ‘Chapas’ Silva and Derry Guinan ended almost before it started after the Irishman retired with an injured leg barely a minute into the contest.
