Finalgarve’s Praia Grande Development

Dear Editor,
It is shocking that the CCDR Algarve has ignored the widespread public opposition to this proposed enormous and environmentally damaging development. The Commission has gone through the motions of a public consultation exercise, but chosen to pay no attention to the comments made by the public and many experts.

The CCDR file has been closed and sent to the State Secretary for the Environment recommending approval of the development, which is apparently now set to be rubber-stamped. The whole procedure is a travesty of democracy and the President of the CCDR should explain on what environmental grounds he justifies rejecting public opinion. From the environmental point of view the development is a serious disaster as has been pointed out to him in the many comments sent to him. He should tell us why his Commission is prepared to allow it.
