A TOTAL of 160 young people in the Algarve have volunteered to help combat forest fires this summer.
The initiative aims to protect forest resources and fire prevention by sending volunteers out into the community to raise awareness about the risks of forest fires.
Young people aged between 18 and 30 will receive general and specific training in forestry rules, plant life, cartography, reforestation as well as communication and warning signals.
Throughout Portugal, there are around 7,000 volunteers and this initiative by the fire service will continue until September 30.
