BOMBEIROS IN the Alentejo regions of Ourique, Castro Verde, Almodôvar, Aljustrel and Odemira battled to bring fires under control seven kilometres west of Ourique on Saturday.
The flames had threatened homes in the hamlet of Chada Nova owned by British and Portuguese residents.
Helicopter crews have been strategically placed at various locations in the Alentejo to protect the region which has a high fire risk.
Each crew will cover a 30 kilometres radius and will provide rapid response and cover ahead of ground crews in the case of a fire.
