Flight delays follow UK attacks

PASSENGERS HAVE been warned they face lengthy delays at UK airports following this week’s attempted terrorist attacks in central London and Glasgow.

Airports across the UK remain on high alert, with security tightened. Many flights were delayed and some airports were forced to close for security reasons.

Glasgow Airport reopened less than two days after a jeep loaded with gas cylinders crashed into the terminal building and, Stansted Airport was evacuated and temporarily closed on Monday afternoon as an unattended bag was checked by bomb disposal experts.

The owner was eventually traced and questionned by police.

Across mainland Europe, many airports also increased security, but staff at Faro airport said that this had not caused them serious delays.

“Flights have not been delayed for more than half-an-hour and this has only occurred in a few instances,” said an airport spokesman.

They are urging passengers travelling to UK airports to arrive for check-in as early as possible. “Added security checks can cause delays but this will not happen if passengers arrive early,” a Monarch Airlines spokesperson told The Resident on Tuesday. “We have had no delays today (from Faro airport) and we do not expect to have many in the next few days.” Spokespersons from GB Airways and Easyjet also said they had experienced very few delays in flights departing from Faro airport.

Slight delays are expected to continue in the UK and other European airports as they remain on high alert with thorough security checks.
