Fuel costs hit taxi tariffs

TRAVELLING IN a taxi is set to become more expensive as fares are due to increase as a direct result of the rise in diesel prices in Portugal.

The increase will see basic tariffs rise by about 5.83 per cent if agreed by government representatives and members of the Portuguese association of taxi drivers (ANTRAL).

Florêncio Almeida and Carlos Ramos were both representing ANTRAL and said that they were satisfied with the agreement that was being proposed because they felt that it would solve many of the problems that have been discussed by taxi drivers.

Taxis that are renewed and replaced by vehicles that are more energy efficient and kinder to the environment will also be rewarded with incentives put in place to encourage environmentally friendly changes in the agreement.

The government refused to reduce the price of diesel by cutting taxes and also rejected a proposal to introduce diesel specifically for commercial vehicles.
