Furniture to last a lifetime

news: Furniture to last a lifetime

IF YOU have a desire for furniture that’s different, special and unique, which can’t be bought from Algarve Shopping or is ‘run of the mill’, go to James Owens of Southwest Joinery.

James, a talented carpenter and joiner, has been established in Portugal for two years making Bespoke (custom-made) furniture for clients. With an impressive, extensive portfolio, James offers prospective clients a wide range of furniture pieces to choose from. All clients are invited to look through his portfolio before the consultation about the piece begins.

James believes in creating tailor-made products for his clients by establishing their needs and expectations. Using traditional methods, James’s furniture is made completely for the individual and no two pieces are ever the same. Not only will you receive a unique ‘Owens piece’, but you have the opportunity to put your own stamp onto the furniture as well. Adding that personal touch makes the piece more than just furniture, it can be admired and enjoyed not only by present generations but future ones as well.

After the initial consultation, clients receive detailed drawings of the final piece, where upon any final amendments can be made before work begins. James is happy for clients to visit him at his workshop in Budens while making their furniture so any questions can be answered and they can see how their piece is coming along.

At Southwest Joinery, there is always a wide selection of hand-picked timber in stock, ranging from walnut, cherry, maple and oak. James is adamant that, for the best quality furniture to be achieved, you must use only the best quality timber. He imports the majority of his wood from outside of Portugal, mainly from the UK. “It’s pointless designing a piece of high class furniture unless it’s made from furniture grade timber,” James said.

Through his experience over the years, James has found that a consistently high quality source of wood has been the kiln-dried timber selected from American/European farmed sources. From these, James selects the best cuts to ensure that the grain and coloration flows naturally from one panel on the piece to the next.
