Garden fair focuses on drought-resistant plants

A Mediterranean Garden Fair is taking place in Estoi on Saturday, October 26 from 11am to 5pm.

The garden show will be held in the area used for the large monthly market, to the south of the historic town centre of Estoi, near Faro.

There will be a plant clinic for gardening queries, so visitors are advised to take along photographs or examples of plants to identify.

Experienced members of the Mediterranean Garden Society (MGS) will be on hand to offer help and advice on gardening problems and there will be short practical demonstrations of basic gardening techniques such as seed sowing and taking cuttings.

Visitors will be able to purchase plants, seeds and second-hand gardening books and browse through the stalls run by selected specialist plant nurseries.

This year, the theme of the fair is low-maintenance Mediterranean gardens that use drought-resistant plants, needing little or no irrigation, with advice provided on reducing or removing lawns.

The fair is being held for the first time in collaboration with the Junta de Freguesia de Estoi and Conceição since they were united in the recent elections. This has allowed organisers to build on the successful event held in Estoi last year.

Access to the fair is free and there is ample parking on the adjacent market grounds.
