Garry Mann loses extradition battle

Garry Mann, a former firefighter from Kent, was due to be flown to Lisbon on Wednesday to begin a two-year prison sentence for his alleged part in riots in Albufeira during the 2004 European football championships.

At the time the Algarve Resident went to press on Wednesday, Garry Mann, who has been fighting for some months to prevent his extradition, was scheduled to leave Heathrow Airport at 4.20pm for Lisbon airport on TAP Air Portugal.

Upon arrival in Portugal, he was expected to then be transferred to an undisclosed prison. Garry Mann said: “I have been let down by the politicians that agreed to the UK’s rigid extradition laws and the European Arrest Warrant and by the judges who no longer seem willing to stand up for justice.“This was supposed to have been for terrorists implemented after the 9/11 attack but for some reason I have been caught in its net. I am not the first victim of this system and, until it is reformed, I will not be the last.”

Jago Russell, the chief executive of Fair Trials International, said: “The UK’s decision to extradite him is an outrage. Politicians in Europe and the UK must now wake up to the injustice being caused under Europe’s fast track extradition system and reform it before countless others suffer the same fate as Garry.”
