Portugal’s main trade unions, CGTP and UGT, are joining forces to organise a general strike on June 27.
The two unions, despite their differing views and often working back-to-back for political reasons, have agreed to plan the general strike together to ensure as many people as possible will take to the streets on the day to fight the government and its austerity measures.
Calling on people from all walks of life to join the general strike, the CGTP and UGT leaders say the protest will be against “the attempt to destroy the welfare state, public schooling, the national health service, pension and wage cuts, deteriorating work conditions, job cuts and Troika’s dictatorship”.
