Tavira Câmara is going to create a new municipal company, called Tavira Verde (Green Tavira), which will ensure the maintenance and renovation of domestic drainage systems, and guarantee the cleanliness of the city’s green areas. The news was announced by the Câmara President, Macário Correia, who also said that the council’s basic drainage system will be renovated.
The work will be carried out by Águas do Algarve (AdA), regional water company, and the project, which is expected to be completed by 2007, means an investment of around 20 million euros. According to the Câmara President, during the next three years, a new structure will be built – a large pipe of 23 metres in length starting at Fuzeta and ending at Cabanas de Tavira – that will allow the collection of domestic residue from the borough’s coastal area. This also means that many water treatment plants (ETARs), which are no longer in use or have become inefficient due to increased urbanisation, will be deactivated.
After the work is completed, the aim is to connect the area of the borough south of the Via do Infante motorway to the main drainage system, in order to stop the use of septic tanks (fossas) in smaller areas. The project also includes the construction of eight water treatment plants, the majority of which will be located near the current ETARs, to transport the residue water to the new ETAR. The water originating from the new plants will also be used in agricultural irrigation systems and on golf courses.
