High fire risk

FIVE COUNCILS in the Alentejo and the Algarve were classified as high risk for fires early this week.

Another 16 councils in the centre and south of Portugal were considered as moderate risk, according to the Institute of Meteorology.

Alcoutim, Castro Marim, Tavira and São Brás de Alportel in the Algarve and Grândola in the Alentejo are considered to be of particular high risk at the moment.

Algarve areas with a moderate risk are Loulé, Silves, Vila Real de Santo António, Faro, Monchique, Aljezur and Lagos.

The risk scale starts at reduced and runs through moderate, elevated and very elevated up to high. At the same time, the Alentejo coastline, the Algarve, the Azores and Madeira were said to have a very high level of ultraviolet radiation.

Highlighting the current dangers, a Resident staff member witnessed a fire close to her house near Porches on Saturday. Fortunately, the bombeiros were quickly on hand to dampen the flames, including the use of a helicopter.
