Portugal’s higher education system was considered the 22nd best in the world in 2012, which is an improvement of one spot compared to the previous year.
Portugal improved its performance in all of the evaluation factors on the list created by the global network Universitas 21, which gathers data from universities and compares education systems as opposed to institutions.
According to the ranking, Portugal improved mostly in its international connections, which consists of the percentage of students enrolled abroad or co-authors of international articles, as well as its invested resources in higher education.
According to the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities, “the publication of the ranking confirms the quality of the Portuguese higher education institutions.”
Universitas 21’s ranking includes higher education systems from 50 countries and is led by the USA, followed by Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and Denmark. Portugal is placed between countries such as Ireland (18th), Spain (20th), South Korea (24th), Italy (29th) and Brazil (41st).
