HIV report

A UN report has revealed that around 34,000 adults and children over the age of 15 were infected with the HIV virus in Portugal in 2007.

This report, which was released on Tuesday, estimated that the total number of HIV positive people in Portugal was around 34,000, with less than 500 people dying last year as a result of the disease.

Portugal has been listed with 16 other countries, including the UK, Germany and Denmark, in which there is coverage of more than 75 per cent for treatment of people in an advanced stage of the disease, with antiretroviral drugs.
