Iberia police join forces

A SPECIAL meeting was held early this week involving Portuguese and Spanish police forces.

The heads of department of GNR, PSP, the public security police mainly present in the cities, and Polícia Judiciária, the criminal police, met the Guardia Civil, the Spanish main police force to discuss their strategy on the anti-terrorism fight.

The meeting was held in Lisbon, at the headquarters of Polícia Judiciária on Tuesday.

The police forces of the two countries called the meeting after a car was found, a week earlier, with explosives.

The mystery car, with a Portuguese registration and property of a national car rental company, was found in Ayamonte, near Vila Real de Santo António.

The police now believe the south region, the Algarve and Spain’s Andalucia, has a local cell of the terrorist group ETA, the Basque group fighting for the independence of the Basque Spanish region.
