A LEGAL battle, sparked by one of the most significant archaeological finds in recent history, the discovery of Oetzi the Iceman in 1991 in Italy, has finally been resolved.
German hikers Erika and Helmut Simon found the 5,300 year old remains in the Oetz valley of northern Italy, but officials had refused an adequate finders’ fee, which according to Italian law stipulates it to be 25 per cent of the artefact’s value.
On Monday, it was finally agreed to pay 150,000 euros to Helmut Simon’s widow, Erika, now aged 71.
