NOTES IN Time, a concert of Irish music, is to be held at the Church of Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso on Saturday, September 20.
Organised by the Irish Association in Portugal with support from Bom Sucesso, Mr. C. Vermet, Aer Lingus and the Embassy of Ireland, the event aims to raise money towards the restoration of the beautiful and historic Bom Sucesso church in Belém.
The church is part of the old Irish order of Dominican Sisters who came to Lisbon in the 17th century, which today is still run by a small group of elderly Irish nuns.
This concert will feature the world-famous Irish fiddler and tin whistler John Sheahan of the Dubliners fame with Michael Howard performing alongside on classical guitar and Irish traditional singing from Róisin Elsafty who is making her Portuguese debut in Lisbon.
The special evening will herald the launch of a publication about the role of the Irish in 17th century Lisbon by Professor Declan Downey of University College Dublin, who also relates the history of the founding of the church which was first opened in 1670.
Historian Pedro O’Neill also contributed to the work which will be officially launched by His Excellency, the Eire Ambassador to Portugal, James Brennan.
While admission is free, donations will be gratefully received. Profits will be donated towards the cost of the restoration work needed on this historic church in Belém.
