Dear Editor, The article in this week’s paper (July 1 edition) has me so worked up that I’d like to comment.
I’m just about of the opinion that these attacks should not be reported on at all in the press. Why?
Because who in their right mind – anywhere in the world – walks around anywhere at 4am and expects to be completely safe?
Rightly or wrongly, the world we all live in has absolutely no “safe havens”.
So why should these stupid people’s actions put such a negative slant on safety in Portugal?
It’s not the police’s fault (too little security – ha).
I defy anyone to show that there is any country (far less town or city) in the world where the police force is out in such numbers at 4am so that crime is prevented.
Let’s get the visitors to be realistic – do daft things and you can expect the possibility of less than happy outcomes.
If you’d expect to have to take extreme care “at home”, then expect to have to take extreme care when you’re on holiday – no matter where you are in the world. It’s just common sense.
