CROATIAN PLAYER, Goran Ivanisevic will be replacing 11 times Grand Slam winner Bjorn Borg, who has pulled out of the Grand Champions tennis championship, which is due to start on Tuesday.
Goran Ivanisevic, who could not participate in the Vale de Lobo Grand Champions last year due to injuries, is now replacing Borg who is recovering from an injury in his right arm.
About Ivanisevic, Pedro Frazão, president of Premier Sports, the organiser of the Vale de Lobo Grand Champions, said: “I was planning to bring him last year but he could not come due to an injury.”
This year, Frazão said, “he was so happy with my invitation that he had already reserved plane tickets for his family to come”.
Goran Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon in 2001, is ranked number one in the South African Airways Champions Tour 2008 after winning the Istanbul competition a week ago.
Matches in Vale do Lobo start at 5pm each evening up to the final on Friday, August 8 at 10.15pm.
Henri Leconte, Marcelo Rios and Guillermo Vilas will all be playing in the competition and tickets are still available from the tournament website, with prices starting at 16 euros.
