THE JEWISH Community of the Algarve will be celebrating the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah 5768, on Wednesday, September 12 with a buffet dinner in Praia da Rocha.
The dinner will include traditional foods such as gefilte fish, chopped liver and herring and challah, round white bread, and more. Apple slices are dipped in honey and eaten to symbolically ensure a sweet year ahead.
The Jewish calendar year is counted from the creation and is based on a lunar month, with the first month being called Tishri.
The greeting offered each other at the New Year is, in Hebrew, Leshanah Tovah Tikatevu, which means may you be inscribed for a good year.
