Jobless inspected

Thousands of jobless people saw their unemployment benefit cancelled last year upon inspection by Portugal’s Employment and Professional Training Institute (IEFP).

A total of 7,310 of the around 530,000 jobless people listed in the country’s employment centres were notified of the benefit cancellation after the IEFP suspected cases of fraud.

In some instances, individuals were receiving unemployment benefit while carrying out untaxed work.

Other cases were related to individuals who had refused job or training proposals through the employment centres.
