José Mourinho sacked by Fenerbahçe

Surprise announcement came this morning after Fenerbahçe were knocked out in the UEFA Champions League playoff stage by Benfica

Portuguese coach José Mourinho has been sacked by Turkish club Fenerbahçe after just six games this season.

The decision was announced this morning, two days after the club failed to qualify for this season’s UEFA Champions League following a playoff defeat to Benfica.

“Our professional football team has parted ways with José Mourinho, who has been serving as head coach since the 2024-2025 season,” the club said in a statement posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). “We thank him for his efforts for our team thus far and wish him success in his future career.”

However, the decision to sack Mourinho may have had more to do with disagreements between the coach and the board. According to Turkish media outlet Spor Arena, Mourinho’s relationship with the board had soured following his remarks about the club’s failings during the summer transfer window – namely the club’s inability to complete the transfer of Benfica winger Kerem Aktürkoglu, who – to add insult to injury – ended up scoring the decisive goal for Benfica in Lisbon on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, rumours are circulating that Mourinho may be eyeing a return to the Premier League, where he enjoyed great success with Chelsea.
