Lagos Zoo introduces new resident

A female Rhinoceros Hornbill, Aceros rhinoceros, arrived at Faro airport on July 8 after being flown in from Barcelona Zoo to take up residence at Lagos Zoo, located near Barão de São João.

The bird, the only existing female of its species to be found within Europe, will join a breeding programme when it is released from quarantine, with the male Hornbills already living in Lagos Zoo.

A new habitat has been created at Lagos Zoo to accommodate the only pair of Rhinoceros Hornbills existing in Europe, which includes artificial trees for nesting and other features to recreate an environment similar to that of their natural habitats found in Borneo.

Meanwhile, a new snack bar has been opened at Lagos Zoo.

The snack bar, which can seat 70 people, has been renovated with a Medusa theme using architecture by José Maria Pereira to recreate the impression of an ancient temple.

Visitors to the zoo will be able to buy snacks, ice creams and light meals from the Medusa snack bar which is open daily from 10am until 7pm within the zoo.
