THERE ARE currently 1.4 million legal weapons in Portugal, an increase of 90,000 compared with last year even though new legislation has been brought in to lower the number of weapons licences.
The new legislation for gun licensing aims to make it more difficult to obtain the licence and requires a medical exam, proof that the owner knows how to use and keep the weapon and an insurance policy.
Firearms are now classified on a scale from A to G depending on how dangerous they are.
