Lisbon falls to 60th position in list of ‘best cities to live in’

“Lack of security” reason for falling four places from last year

Lisbon fell four places in the list of the best cities to live in, dropping to 60th position. The Portuguese capital registered the 10th largest drop among 173 cities evaluated worldwide.

The analysis was based on five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment and education and infrastructure.

Lack of security was the factor that most threatened the stability of cities that fell in the 2025 ranking – and this is why Lisbon fell four places compared to last year.

London and Amsterdam were also among cities falling for the same reason.

This is the conclusion of the Economist Intelligence Unit study, which evaluated places around the world that offer the best and worst living conditions.

The study however shows that Western Europe remains the best choice for those who want to live a ‘better quality of life’, says SIC. (Arguably, if researchers had visited other Portuguese cities, they may well have ranked higher than Lisbon, by dint of the fact that the capital has been suffering from rising ‘insecurity’ for some years now.)

As for the top city to live in, this is now Copenhagen, snatching the top spot from Vienna, Austria, which had stayed in the first position for three years. ND
