A lorry drivers’ union has threatened a national strike at the end of May if its demands are not met.
The National Association of Portuguese Transport (ANTP) is calling on the government to implement an EU directive that allows the reduction of eight cents by litre of diesel, the cancelation of tolls on SCUT highways, a 50 per cent reduction on toll costs at night time and amendments to the Portuguese Labour Code.
Meetings have been held with the government to discuss these issues, but the ANTP claims that “there are no assurances that our claims will be accepted. If a decision is not made quickly, we will go ahead with the strike,” said a spokesman.
A date for the strike has not been announced as the union wants it to be a “surprise” strike.
