Machado on the march

Former Portuguese tennis number one Rui Machado brought his career Futures category tournament tally to 11 by winning in Guimarães last Sunday.

The 29-year-old from Faro led 5-7, 6-1, 3-0 in the final of the http://www.0,000 event when Dutch opponent Miliaan Niesten retired.

Machado, who is hoping to break back into the world’s top 100 next season following a year marred by injury, is turning out for Barcelona’s Real Polo during this week’s Spanish first division club championships.

Further afield another Algarvean, André Gaspar Murta, is in action in Lagos, Nigeria. The youngster from Tavira, ranked No680 by the ATP, reached the semi-finals of the Futures Governor’s Cup last week and this week is again competing in the second of the only two tournaments of that category held each year in the West African country.
