Make sure you don’t miss Mamamaratona this year

Mamamaratona, the walk/race against breast cancer, is returning to the Portimão riverside area on October 13.

The event is organised by the Algarve Oncology Association and aims to raise awareness among the population about cancer and the need to lead a healthier lifestyle.

All proceeds from the event, which is part of the international ‘Pink October’ movement, will go to help towards the construction of a temporary residence for cancer patients being treated at the Faro Radiotherapy Unit.

Mamamaratona, now in its 13th year, has also become one of the main events in the region’s athletics calendar, with several medal winners taking part this year such as Ana Cabecinha, Ana Dias, Elly van Hulst, Hélder Costa, António Fortunato, António Silva, Carlos Cabral and Ezequiel Canário.

The walk/race starts at 10am with participants asked to gather along the riverside area of Portimão, near the old fish auction house (Antiga Lota). The course varies from between 5km and 8km, while the ‘Mini-Maratona’ and the 2nd Half-Mamamaratona, aimed at professional athletes, covers 10km and 21km respectively.

Pre-registration is required via www.aaalgarve.org and costs €5 (€15 if done on the day of the race) and €7.5 (or €20 on the day). Participants will receive a t-shirt, hat, running vest and promotional material.

The cost to pre-register for the 13th Mamamaratona is €5 for adults and €3 for children, including a t-shirt, hat and promotional items. This can be done at the AOA headquarters in Faro, Forum Algarve (Faro), Continente Shopping Centre in Portimão, Barlavento Hospital, or on the day of the event, from 8am to 9.45am, with registration increasing by €1.
