Man arrested at Portimão Hospital after smuggling drugs in stomach

After undergoing treatment, the man expelled a package containing oxycodone, alprazolam and cocaine

A 22-year-old foreign man was arrested after being caught red-handed with drugs inside his body at the A&E department of Portimão Hospital in the Algarve.

According to PJ police, the man had swallowed a drug-filled package before flying into Portugal, entering through Faro’s Gago Coutinho International Airport. Once in Algarve, he apparently began suffering health issues which led him to the hospital. Once there, hospital staff alerted authorities.

During medical treatment, the suspect – whose life was in jeopardy, according to PJ police – expelled a package containing oxycodone, alprazolam (both strong prescription drugs), and around 1.7 grams of cocaine, believed to be destined for sale in the region.

Originally from outside Portugal, the man was released from hospital and brought before a judge. He has been placed under Portugal’s ‘Termo de Identidade e Residência’, meaning he must notify authorities when leaving the country and appear before police whenever called.
