Man dies at unsupervised beach in Loulé

A 49-year-old French man died on Sunday afternoon (August 13) after going into cardiac arrest while swimming in an unsupervised area between Vale do Lobo beach and Loulé Velho beach.

Authorities were alerted at around 6.45pm, with personnel from the Faro Maritime Police, INEM (National Institute of Medical Emergency), lifeguards from the beachgoer assistance team of Loulé Council, and the Faro Red Cross being dispatched to the scene.

Beachgoers who spotted the man unconscious in the water were able to pull him to land, while lifeguards initiated basic life support manouevers until INEM arrived. However, the man was pronounced dead on the spot despite their best efforts.

The victim’s body was transported to the Faro Institute of Legal Medicine by the Faro Red Cross, while Maritime Police’s Psychology Department provided support to the victim’s family.
