Major haul spotted by maritime police near mouth of Guadiana River

Maritime police seized 21 bales of suspected narcotics weighing approximately 876 kilograms off the coast of the Algarve this Thursday morning, near the mouth of the Guadiana River.

The drugs were discovered drifting in Portuguese territorial waters during a routine patrol by officers from the Vila Real de Santo António command.

“During the collection of the material, which was heading for Spanish territorial waters, the Spanish authorities were immediately contacted to proceed with its collection,” the national maritime authority (AMN) said.

The AMN statement added that the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Vila Real de Santo António recorded the incident and that the seized narcotic product will be handed to PJ criminal police.
