AN ISLAMIC medina (old town) from the 10th Century was uncovered in Vila Real de Santo António last week, following archaeological excavations in Cacela Velha.
Between May 7 and July 4, excavators combed the area for any structures of archaeological significance and investigators were rewarded with the discovery of the Qast’alla Darraj medina, which was under the control of the Banu Daraj family during that century.
Following the results of the excavations, it has been decided that more excavations are due to begin next year, in the hope that more historical treasures are uncovered.
