A merger between British Airways and Spanish national carrier Iberia has been approved by the European Commission.
The Commission concluded that the merger would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA).
Investigations by the EC also showed that the single business would continue to face sufficient competition from other carriers on routes between the UK and Spain to allow passengers adequate alternatives on these routes.
The merger makes the new company the third largest in Europe after the German airline Lufthansa and the French-Dutch company Air France KLM.
