Minister’s driver receives suspended sentence for killing motorway worker

Closure finally over tragedy of much-loved family man Nuno Santos

The family of motorway worker Nuno Santos heard today that the driver of the ministerial car that killed him on the A6 over four years ago has received a 14-month prison sentence, suspended.

Driver Marco Pontes has always been ‘in the frame’ for this tragic incident, albeit the family and the Association of Self-Mobilised Citizens (ACA-M) had made a case for indicting the minister as well.

It may be that this conviction will help the family receive the compensation it is fighting for.

This way, the conviction could be seen as closure: Nuno Santos’ devastated wife and daughters, from the outset, were never seen to direct their anguish at Marco Pontes, suggesting they believed he was simply an employee following orders.

As it is, Pontes was found guilty of ‘homicide by unconscious negligence’ – a term rarely used in reports of fatal accidents.
