FARO AIRPORT may gain new flight destinations in 2008 as part of a plan currently being prepared to promote the Algarve next year.
António Pina, President of the Região de Turismo do Algarve, (RTA), said the document is being put together by the RTA in association with the Associação de Turismo do Algarve, (ATA), Algarve’s tourism association.
One of the key objectives is to allocate next year’s budget of 5.25 million euros, the same as the funds available this year.
The RTA will also be adding an extra 3.5 million euros to this, which will be used to promote the region in the internal market.
The negotiation of new flight destinations from low-cost airlines at Faro airport is part of this plan to distribute the budget.
Some of the destinations currently under negotiation include Moscow, Paris and an increase in the number of flights to Berlin.
António Pina said: “We are working on several plans at once,” adding, “We are going to see which flight destinations we can achieve and then focus our promotional material accordingly”.
He said a document is also being prepared that will include an extension to the Algarve’s regional tourism plan until 2015 as well as complement the national strategic tourism plan.
These documents will be presented to the Comissão Regional de Turismo, regional tourism commission, and to the ATA assembly later this month. After this, the internal and external marketing plans for the region will be agreed.
