More teachers to face dole queues

The Ministry of Education has again upset teachers’ unions with their latest proposal encouraging the termination of contracts by mutual agreement. The move is aimed at teachers under the age of 60 who still have not requested retirement.

A press release from the ministry says teachers can request contract terminations between November 15 and January 31.

The proposal suggests that teachers under the age of 50 will receive the equivalent of 1.25 months’ pay for every year they have worked, adding that teachers between the ages of 50-59 will be offered a month’s wage for every year they have worked.

Teachers will have five working days (starting from the day they are notified) to decide if they will accept the proposed compensation and agree to contract terminations.
