New British Consul named

PAUL RODWELL has been named as the new British Consul in the Algarve and will take up his post in Portimão on September 15.

The new consul hails from a background in the hotel industry, managing top hotels in various countries for prestigious companies such as the Hyatt Group.

The British Ambassador to Portugal, Alex Ellis said: “I’m delighted Paul Rodwell is joining us as British Consul in the Algarve. His considerable experience in the service industry together with his strong customer care skills will be a huge asset.

“One of Paul’s first tasks will be to oversee the move of the British Consulate in Portimão into brand new premises. The appointment of someone of Paul’s calibre together with the investment in new offices underlines the importance the Foreign & Commonwealth Office attaches to providing top quality consular services to British nationals either living or visiting the Algarve”.

The appointment of Paul Rodwell came after the resignation at the end of June of Consul Celia Edwards.

She was replaced temporarily by Consul for the Canary Islands, Steve Jones, who guided the consulate through the notoriously busy month of August.

There are approximately 40,000 British citizens resident in the Algarve and every summer more than 1.5 million British visitors come to the region.

The British Consulate in Portimão has changed the opening hours for attending to the public. It is now open throughout lunchtime, Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm.

To contact the consulate, please telephone 282 490 750, Fax 282 490 758 or email bc.portimao@netcabo.pt The consulate also provides a 24-hour emergency service. Out of office hours, the Consulate telephone number is 282 490 750.
