New Family Health Unit opens in Portimão

Portimão has welcomed the opening of a new Family Health Unit

The Algarve’s Local Health Unit (ULS) has announced the launch of the 7Mares Family Health Unit (USF 7Mares) at the Portimão Health Centre.

The new unit, staffed by a team of seven doctors, seven nurses and five technical assistants, opened officially on Monday (June 16), set to serve around 12,500 patients.

The launch of the new USF comes less than two months after health professionals sounded the alarm over delayed minor improvements which they said were putting the opening of the new unit at risk.

According to ULS Algarve, the new unit is designed to improve access, continuity, and quality of care, in line with its focus on efficiency and community proximity.

Leading the team is Dr. David de Lima Marques, who will coordinate the unit’s multidisciplinary efforts to provide patient-centered care.

The creation of USF 7Mares is part of a broader national strategy to modernise and decentralise primary healthcare, empowering local units with more autonomy and a stronger connection to the communities they serve.

Tiago Botelho, President of the Board of Directors of the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS), celebrated the opening of the new family health centre and thanked everyone “directly and indirectly” involved in the process, including the municipal council of Portimão and its mayor Álvaro Bila.
