New home for girls

A NEW home for young girls needing help has been opened in Faro.

The centre, which spans three floors, has a capacity to care for 36 girls aged between 12 and 18. Seven girls have already been admitted to the centre since its inauguration at the weekend.

The centre is designed to support underprivileged girls and orphans for an average period of six months while new homes are found for them or if they are near the age of 18, they will be helped to find jobs and to learn to fend for themselves.

There will be a total of 17 staff in administrative, auxiliary and medical departments to care for girls, who will come from the Algarve also from other regions of Portugal and abroad. The idea for the centre was conceived nine years ago and the project has been funded by Faro Câmara, social security, as well as more than 30 companies and associations, including Faro’s Catholic Church group, which will run the centre.

Faro Câmara President, José Apolinário, said he was very proud of this initiative and believed it was one of the most important projects in Faro. As well as Apolinário and many others, the inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister for Employment and Social Security, Vieira da Silva, and Bishop of the Algarve, D Manuel Neto Quintas, who blessed the centre.
