ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANISATIONS in Portugal and Spain are working together to create a new natural park to protect the Baixo Guadiana region on the border of the two countries.
A final proposal is to be presented in October and, according to João Santos, member of Almargem, one of the three non-governmental entities involved in the project, “if this process does not start immediately, in five years there will be nothing to preserve”.
Working alongside the Portuguese association Almargem are the Spanish Ecologistas en Acción and the foundation Terra Pura.
The proposal aims to involve the already existing protected areas in Spain and in Portugal, like the Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim, in the Portuguese border; the Mata Nacional de las Terras de la Ordem and the Sapal of Isla Cristina, both in Spain.
The new Iberian protected area is also meant to increase the international projection of the natural patrimony of the two countries, while aiming to put a stop on the growing pressure coming from construction companies to build there.
