PORTUGAL HAS released a new national coin to commemorate the participation of Portuguese athletes in the Olympic Games.
This 2.5 euro coin has been given out in change for purchases by the Modelo and Continente supermarkets on every eighth day of each month between May and August this year.
It represents a partnership between Portugal’s Olympic committee, Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, the national mint, and the Grupo Sonae, which owns the participating supermarkets.
Ermino Rocha, a spokesman from the Bank of Portugal’s treasury, told The Resident: “This commemorative coin is legal tender
in Portugal but cannot be used for purchases in other EU countries.
“Any country in the EU can create coins of any value for collection and commemorations, but only the officially recognised coins can be used in all of the countries.”
