Newborn left outside Leiria fire station in shopping bag

Shopping bag contained nappies and milk, says CNN Portugal

A newborn baby boy was left early this morning with the Leiria Firefighters, who transported him to the Leiria Hospital.

The incident was called in at 3:57 am, after the baby was found at the entrance to the fire station building, inside a shopping bag.

The baby was then taken to Leiria Hospital for evaluation and the case is now in the hands of authorities, writes Lusa.

The information was initially reported by CNN Portugal, which added that the shopping bag, in addition to the baby, contained diapers and milk.

Video surveillance footage from outside the barracks has been kept, which could help PJ police identify who abandoned the newborn, the station’s fire chief has said (see update below).

CNN’s report also cites ‘hospital sources’ as saying the baby will have been born in the last 24-hours.

UPDATE: Video surveillance images came through for investigators who have already identified the mother (a 27-year-old Brazilian woman) and taken her in for questioning. The woman has been made an ‘arguida’ (official suspect) for the crime of exposing a minor to abandonment.

A background story of what led to the baby’s abandonment may well come out in tomorrow’s newspapers.
