ALJEZUR DISTRICT has created an industrial park where polluting activities are not welcome.
Although Aljezur is one of the poorest districts in the Algarve, the local Câmara has decided that it does not want progress at any price. Zona Industrial da Feiteirinha is a new industrial park in the district and the attractive price of one euro for a square metre of land seems irresistible for many industrial companies interested in relocating or starting up.
Green only
However, the Câmara has decreed that only companies with environmentally friendly policies will be accepted. The park’s location is proving very attractive for many investors, who have their eyes on the new main road due to be built nearby.
It will connect Lagos to Sines, a very important Portuguese port that is the base for several oil companies, and to the new dam in Alqueva, in the Alentejo. The park still has many empty places but Paulo Oliveira, Investors’ Manager for Aljezur Câmara, says many of the land parcels are already contracted to companies.
“Investors come to my office with their investment intentions and I help them all the way,” said Oliveira. “But they have to respect the environment while being economically sustainable.”
The park is on 163,000 square metres, comprising 43 individual land parcels, many of which are already occupied and in the first stages of infrastructural works.
A second stage of the park is scheduled to be completed in the middle of 2008 and many companies are already fighting for some of the bigger parcels of land available.
