Noise dispute

Albufeira Câmara refutes allegations that it is sending police officers to fine bar owners for excessive noise while their establishments are crowded with tourists.

A Resident reader accused the local câmara of going “out of its way to upset local bars and tourists at the start of the summer season” and potentially putting local businesses at risk.

On the other hand, residents have been complaining about excessive noise at night and criticise the câmara for not dealing with the situation.

The Resident contacted António Gonçalves, the head of department on the noise control issues at Albufeira Câmara, who said: “The old centre of Albufeira and the Polis area are crowded with bars and restaurants.” Many of them, he adds, “have live music very loud and until late”, and “what we do is to make them preserve a certain balance in the noise levels because there are people living there”.

Gonçalves has regular meetings with the bar owners and explains that the “inspections are made throughout the 12 months of the year, except for those bars that only open for the summer season”.
