Nurses announce two-day strike for March

SEP, the Portuguese Syndicate of Nurses has announced a two-day strike for members throughout the country between March 22-23.

SEP spokesperson José Carlos Martins explains the decision follows the “lack of follow-through in commitments made by health ministry” which he accused of “not trying to resolve current problems, aggravating them and creating new problems”.

A bit like issues affecting specialist doctors (click here), Martins referred to the complete absence of recruitment drives last year, despite the crying need for new staff at health centres and hospitals.

The strike call is due to be ratified at SEP’s next meeting of the national board, due to take place on March 1, say reports.
