One dead in Bragança train crash

ONE PERSON has died and more than 20 were injured following a train crash this morning(Friday) on the Mirandela railway line near Brunheda station in the north east of Portugal, according to the national civil protection authority.

Four helicopters from the emergency services and the Civil Protection authority were at the scene of the accident, which happened at around 11am this morning, as well as 88 fire fighters and 35 vehicles.

A spokesman for Carrazeda de Ansiães Câmara, where the accident occurred, told Lusa news agency that the railway train derailed, following an explosion, and fell to one side opposite the Tua River, which runs parallel to the track.

A spokesman for the rescue teams at the scene of the accident said that the injured passengers have been transported to Mirandela hospital and regional health centres.

The main road between Chã and Carlão in Alijó County has been closed to facilitate the access of emergency vehicles.
