AN ART installation of oranges representing the Algarve is one of the innovative pieces of art on display at Fort Pau da Bandeira as part of the Local Worlds: spaces, visibilities and transcultural flows exhibition in Lagos.
Dozens of orange trees from the Algarve have been on display at the fort and are an impressive representation of the culture and history of the Algarve in contemporary art form.
The orange exhibition, which will run until September, was created by Inês Amado and follows the concept of the link between Portugal and the UK by showing the importance of the exportation of oranges to London via the Azores.
“See me, taste me, pick me” is written on the wall of the installation and visitors are encouraged to interact with the fruit and challenge their perceptions of the simple orange.
The president of Lagos Câmara, Júlio Barroso described the exhibition as “the cherry on the cake” of the arts programmes held in the area.
Local Worlds, contemporary art programme is an initiative of the Centro Cultural de Lagos as part of the Allgarve events schedule. Works from internationally recognised artists are displayed next to pieces from new contributors. Those involved in the Local Worlds exhibition are of various nationalities helping to give authenticity to works addressing themes such as migratory flows and the construction of identities.
Combining recent works by various visual, contemporary and performing artists, the exhibition hopes to provide a platform for audiences to be able to reflect on the cultural diversity of cities around the world.
The display of works in Lagos is one of many upcoming events as part of the Allgarve programme. It is not only contemporary art that features in the Allgarve events calendar, there are also sporting competitions, musical concerts and gastronomic displays to be held throughout the summer season in the Algarve.
